NACCHO Awards Project to Help Build Local Health Departments Capacity with

Community Health Workers

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DALLAS, TX – March 16, 2023 Umemba Health, LLC was selected by the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) to support local health departments (LHDs) that are implementing strategies to recruit, train, or support Community Health Workers (CHWs) and strengthen their public health workforce. NACCHO represents the country’s nearly 3,000 local health departments and is a national partner of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention’s National Initiative to Address COVID-19 Health Disparities Among Populations at High-Risk and Underserved, Including Racial and Ethnic Minority Populations and Rural Communities monumental grant. Umemba Health will provide technical assistance for LHD grant recipients. The award for $125,000 begins March, runs through July 2023, and includes subcontractor Jenkins Public Health Consulting, LLC.

The project has several goals and objectives, including convening local health departments to share and discuss their CHW strategies, supporting local health departments in their efforts to standardize the practice of CHWs, and educating decision-makers on the strategic benefits of including CHWs in health department efforts. Based on their experience, Umemba Health leaders will identify and share best practices for LHDs working with CHWs in data collection, service delivery, outreach, advocacy, or policy work. The work includes developing, compiling, or tailoring existing resources, frameworks, or toolkits that CHWs can use to advance health equity in their community work. The project further supports local health departments using CHWs to elevate engagement and inclusion of populations at higher risk and that are underserved, including racial and ethnic minority groups and people living in rural communities.

"NACCHO recognizes the need to guide workforce development with CHWs, increasing capacity and education of community health workers in local health departments," said Quisha Umemba, CEO of Umemba Health LLC. "We are thrilled to partner with NACCHO and our subcontractor Jenkins Public Health Consulting, in this way."
